The Matthews Avenue improvement project began in rural west Jonesboro, extending 6.4 miles through the intensely populated heart of the downtown area, and ending in the southeast part of the city.
The improvements varied from simple overlay of existing pavements to the construction of two-lane, three-lane and five-lane facilities along with related drainage and utilities improvements and relocations.
At least two existing single-span bridges required replacement.
