In order to accommodate additional traffic from a new middle school, Sonora Road was widened from two lanes to three lanes, and a traffic signal was added to the intersection with the five-lane U.S. Highway 412.
The project required a traffic study and heavy coordination with the AHTD.
A major challenge was the tight construction timeline. In order to complete the signal before school began, the design was accelerated. MWY then worked with the contractor to reduce the lead time on the equipment delivery in order to have the signal operational in time for the first day of school in August 2012, enhancing the safety for children and parents.
MWY performed design and full construction administration and observation services on the project, and associated with Peters and Associates, Inc. of Little Rock, who performed the traffic study and signal design.
